Proper garden irrigation for a bountiful harvest

A growing number of people from all walks of life are taking up gardening at their homes. These individuals are enjoying the benefits of wholesome, homegrown produce. In addition, they are able to enjoy the benefits associated with the gardening process, which for many people includes a reduction in stress and sense of accomplishment.

Proper irrigation is a fundamental element of the gardening process. There are some specific strategies a person should bear in mind when it comes to irrigating properly a home-based garden.

Know the soil

Proper garden irrigation depends on an understanding of the soil. Soil type is a prime consideration when developing a garden irrigation scheme. Sandy soils are prone to more rapid drying while soils consisting of a substantial amount of clay retain moisture longer.

The organic content in soil also plays a role in water retention. The higher the organic content, the longer a particular plot of soil retains moisture. Composting is a method of not only enriching the nutrient value of the soil but for making it more resilient when it comes to retaining moisture.

Timing of irrigation

If a drip system is not being used, watering in the morning is wise. By taking this course, less water evaporates and leaves dry more quickly and do not become damaged. Night watering is acceptable in that it reduces evaporation. However, watering at night prevents a quick drying of leaves and can result in damage over the long term.

Watering when the sun is at its peak increases unnecessary evaporation. In addition, it can lead to leaf scorching and permanent damage to vegetation in a garden.

Amount of water

More often than not, the issue with garden irrigation is over rather than under watering. Take seriously the recommended amount of water for a particular plant. Coordinate a garden so that plants with similar water needs are situated next to one another.

Pay attention to weather forecasts and invest in a rain gauge. Irrigation is a means of supplementing moisture provided to a garden by rainfall.

Automate the irrigation process

Many people begin the garden growing season with tremendous enthusiasm, a drive that ends up petering out to some degree over time. The lack of attention to a garden occurs for many reasons, including the hustle and bustle associated with everyday living.

As enthusiasm wanes, attention to proper garden irrigation becomes less a focus and does not necessarily occur with appropriate regularity. Understanding this reality, a wise gardener looks into installing an automated watering system.

Such a system need not be complex nor costly. There are simple drip irrigation systems that can be outfitted with a simple automatic timer of the type sold in nearly all home improvement and garden supply outlets.

In addition to being convenient to use, a drip irrigating system is also ecological sound. A drip system exceeds 90 percent efficiency, while a spray system logs in at about 50 to 70 percent.

By implementing these tactics, you will enjoy a healthy, vibrant garden. In addition, you will be furthering ecologically sound gardening practices.
