The do's and don'ts of creating and using personal business cards

Personal business cards are an excellent way to provide an introduction to new contacts and friends. They are easy to develop, simple to carry, and save time when trying to exchange contact information with someone new. There is a science to business cards, though – there are some that promote an outstanding image, and others that just seem cheap and worthless. Here are the “do’s and don’ts” of creating and using personal business and calling cards.

Do:

  • Use a service.
    • There are hundreds of popular business card creation websites, and they are popular for a reason. They save time and effort for the customer, and create a sense of professionalism from the very start. Websites like www.vistaprint.com frequently offer deals and promotions to help customers get started and have many different options, from bright and colorful designs to simple and elegant calling cards.
  • Keep it simple.
    • Personal business cards do not need to include a lot of information to be a powerful introduction. Include a name, a phone number, and an email address. If you are affiliated with a certain group or use a title along with a name, use smaller script directly under the name. There is no need to include much other information.
  • Distribute wisely.
    • Although personal business cards can be easy to dole out, they should only be used in appropriate situations. Keep in mind that personal information is listed on the card, and it should therefore be given out only for good reason. Giving a complete stranger personal information is not a good way to stay safe! Distribute the cards only to people who could become good contacts in the future – talk to the person first to be sure that they are really someone good to get to know.

Don’t:

  • Overdo it.
    • Personal business cards can be fun, but they should not be too wild or crazy. Choose a color scheme and font that is easy to read and does not hurt the eyes. When in doubt, choose black and white; those colors always look professional, no matter what the setting. The font should be simple and clear. It might be tempting to choose a flowy cursive script, but a simpler font like Times New Roman will be much more appealing to a new contact.
  • Make them without help.
    • Business and calling card services were developed for a reason. Trying to design, print, and cut business cards without professional aid is difficult and, in the age of technology, completely unnecessary. Although the price can sometimes seem too much, remember that the cards will come fully finished, with a sturdy paper weight, strong lettering, and a glossy or matte finish. Depending on the preferred style, the cards can even be edited to include raised letters or a specialized card backing with everything from an appointment time slot to a twelve-month calendar.

Without a doubt, personal business cards are a fantastic step to creating new and exciting friendships and contacts. They evoke a sense of professionalism and enable the user to exchange information simply and efficiently. When created and used properly, fruitful relationships are bound to arise.
