The best phones coming in 2018

2017 was an impressive year for phones. With multiple excellent Android releases and the iPhone X dominating holiday sales with innovative Face ID technology, it's a great time to upgrade to the latest device. For those of us with a little more patience, though, there are a few exciting new devices to look forward to this coming year. Take a look at the top three phones to look forward to in 2018.

Samsung Galaxy X

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy X is shrouded in mystery, and hasn't actually received an official announcement. A steady stream of leaks and rumors have been pouring in over the last few months, however, so we have a general sense of what we can expect from this upcoming phone.

Samsung recently patented a foldable screen technology that allows a device to transition from an average-sized handset to a tablet of sorts. As bezels shrink and displays increase in size, it's difficult to make a phone much bigger without it becoming difficult to hold. The solution of a foldable Galaxy X may give people the option to use a large screen for watching YouTube and Netflix, while flipping down to a more convenient size for more compact use.

The potential of this new technology to usher in a new kind of phone puts it comfortably at the top of our list. Whether foldable screens remain a niche feature or become the new standard remains to be seen, but we're certainly looking forward to seeing what Samsung has up their sleeves.

iPhone 9

With the iPhone X recently released, there isn't a lot of information floating around the web on the "iPhone 9" or "iPhone X2." KGI Securities, a reliable smartphone information leaker, has suggested that the phones will see an fall 2018 release date and feature three sizes: 6.3-inch and 5.8-inch devices with an OLED display, as well as a 6.1-inch model with an LCD screen. The design will also likely not be much of a departure from the current generation, with the signature "notch" in the top of the phone to house Face ID technology and a focus on maximizing screen space.

We remain optimistic that the next generation of Apple phones will capitalize on the success of their best-selling phone and continue the pattern of innovation, since it has certainly paid off in terms of sales.

Huawei P20

Huawei has been a household name in their home country of China for years, and has only recently turned their sights toward a western market. While they have yet to gain any significant ground in a market dominated by Samsung and Apple, that's not really through any fault in their phones.

The Huawei P20 is expected later this year, and is rumored to include a face-scanning technology similar to that of the iPhone X. As potentially the first Android phone to feature the same innovation present with Face ID, we're looking forward to seeing what this upcoming phone has to offer – combining premium technology with affordable pricing for those who are willing to stray outside the "standard" Android brands.
